I’ve been thinking a lot lately about women, about our place in the world. I’ve traveled back centuries to figure out what exactly I can say on International Women’s Day that has positive meaning, and what I can do that can have real impact. Here’s what I’ve landed on: As American women, our money, and the money we control, is real and lasting power. If we use our dollars to support women-owned and -led businesses and companies that help women rise (be they in high-ranking positions or on the board), then we control everything. This is not about boycotting anybody—it’s about supporting businesses whose missions support the sort of world in which we want to live. We have power. We just have to use it.

Today is also about being a more conspicuous role model, because when kids shop at businesses owned by women they grow up believing that is one of many options for their life. The same is true for seeing women in roles in science, law enforcement, politics, restaurants, a whole world of professions. Part of today is a call to women in the workforce, and beyond, to stand up and be a role model. Our kids need to see you to know it’s possible.

Jeni’s is doing our part in supporting women-owned business—it’s part of our mission and certification as a B Corp—and I encourage you to do the same. Not just on International Women’s Day, but every single day. Because when American women support each other and grow our power in the world, then we are in a better place to support women globally.

Below, we’ve rounded up some of the women-owned and -led businesses we love supporting in our scoop shop cities. But it’s nowhere near complete. Help us curate this list by responding in the comments.
