The sundae board: our no-fail, go-to, shareable dessert that wows at any kind of gathering. From dinner parties to date night, backyard BBQs to birthday celebrations. It’s like a cheese board for dessert that replaces gouda and cheddar with our favorite ice creams.

Our current inspiration—movie nite—is thanks to the recent release of Sun-Popped Corn ice cream, a flavor as addicting and satisfying as a tub of buttery movie theater popcorn. Our signature ice cream gets top billing on a board that combines our favorite cinema concession snacks, including red licorice, which we turned into a sauce! (Pro tip: Leave ice cream scoopers in the drawer and use cheese spreaders instead.)

It’s time to invite over the neighbors, cue up that rom-com or action flick you’ve been meaning to watch, and throw a sundae board on the coffee table. The beauty of our boards is that they are 100% customizable, so feel free to make it your own. But if you want a great place to start, here’s what’s on our movie nite board:

Ice creams: Salty Caramel, Milkiest Chocolate, Sun-Popped Corn

Sauces: Salty Caramel, Caramelized White Chocolate (from Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home), red licorice sauce (recipe below)

Toppings: Pretzels, kettle chips, peanuts, popcorn, popcorn brittle, sugar-plumped raisins, banana slices, rice cereal treat crumbles, candy-covered sunflower seeds, chocolate buttons

Red licorice sauce

Makes about 6 servings

  • ¼ bag red licorice, cut into bite-size pieces
  • ½ cup water
  • Juice of ½ lemon
  • 1 ounce vodka (optional)

In a small saucepan, combine licorice pieces with water. Whisk over medium-high heat until smooth. Add lemon juice and vodka (if desired—but this will help the sauce stay soft). Serve over ice cream.
