When Jeni was first getting started at the North Market, her stand was right across from the spice shop, and she spent a lot of time experimenting with different spices and spice blends. The first time she smelled Chinese 5-Spice, she immediately thought of the pumpkin pies her grandmother made every Thanksgiving. Our Pumpkin 5-Spice ice cream will bring back similar warm memories to you—though it’s a pleasant departure from the usual nutmeg and allspice medley. We start with roasted kabocha and buttercup pumpkins, grown just for us by our longtime farm partner, Hirsch Fruit Farm. Then add five fragrant spices—ginger, fennel, cinnamon, star anise, and white pepper—and blend in cream, and grass-grazed milk. Try it with a graham cracker crumble.
