Sister Pie is the 🍎 (pie) of Motor City’s eye. Last year, we caravanned ice cream up to their shop in Detroit for a one-night only, pie-and-ice cream party. This year, Sister Pie headed south to give Columbus a slice of the action. For two days, we teamed up with the talented Lisa Ludwinski and her crew for an ice cream-and-pie mash up at our Clintonville scoop shop. 100+ pies later…we’re stuffed. Before our Clintonville scoop shop opened at noon on Saturday, we took Lisa on a quick tour of some of Jeni’s favorite Columbus bakeries. Read below about Sister Pie’s time in Columbus and how to have your own pie excursion in town.
Stop #1 was Fox in the Snow Cafe, a renovated garage with celebrated pastries. While they don’t have pie (yet?!), we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to show an out-of-towner this beautiful space that rivals the best of Brooklyn’s hip spots. We ate endless cinnamon rolls and talked shop with owners, Jeff Excell and Lauren Culley.
Stop #2 was Dough Mama Cafe, a cozy Clintonville favorite. We ordered a slice of Lemon Lavender Chess to share (we may have went overboard at Fox in the Snow). If you’re hungry, Dough Mama’s sit-down cafe has many savory items to fuel your pie hunt.
Stop #3 was Sassafras Bakery—a Saturday morning ritual for many during the Worthington farmers market. We kept it simple with a slice of their Signature Apple and Chocolate Chess pies. Then we FaceTimed with owner AJ Perry, who missed her first Saturday at the bakery in five years … because she was visiting Sister Pie in Detroit!
We ended our tour back at Jeni’s Clintonville to be greeted by eager pie lovers waiting at the door. The clock struck noon and the Sister Pie team slung pies like the pros they are. We got to meet so many awesome people—a #teamjenis member even had her parents visit from Detroit for the event! Scroll below for photos from our latest collab with Sister Pie.
